I wanted to visit North Cascades National Park during my roadtrip through Washington. After staying a night in Spokane, I decided my best bet for accommodations near the park was the little town of Winthrop.
Earlier in my trip, I was camping out in Wyoming. While there, I met a woman who mentioned she grew up in Winthrop. I had never heard of it before, but after that the place stuck in my head. When I saw it on the map near North Cascades, it just seemed like fate.
Originally, I planned to stay at a hostel in Winthrop. Once I arrived in town, however, I had a change of heart. I saw some little cabins right off the main road that caught my eye, so I stopped in at the front office to see what one night would cost me. Lucky for me, they had a one bedroom cabin available for the night and the owner offered me 20% off my stay. How could I say no to that?
That’s how I ended up at River’s Edge Resort in Winthrop, Washington.
River’s Edge Resort is a collection of cabins, ranging in size from one- to three-bedrooms. Some have a view of the Chewuch River, and most have a private hot tub on the deck.
I felt so relaxed from the moment I set foot in my little cabin. It had a bedroom, a bathroom, and a living area equipped with a kitchen. It was the perfect size for me. The whole time I was there, I kept thinking “this is the type of place I want to live in”. The cabin was a welcomed break from hostels and camping and bland hotels.
I stepped out onto the small deck to take in my surroundings. A small creek and some picnic tables sat nearby. A few mule deer grazed for fallen apples. I sat and watched them for a while.
Later in the evening, I cooked a nice dinner for myself, and the rest of the night was spent in my cabin. I lounged on the couch with the back door open, letting the cool breeze flow through, while reading a book and drinking a cup of tea. I was so relaxed.
Normally, I don’t like to leave my accommodation plans for last minute–not having a comfortable place to stay is one of the biggest causes of anxiety for me when traveling. I have to say though, I’m glad I waited this time. It may not have been the cheapest option, but every once in a while I’m willing to spend a little more money for place that’s different.
Unfortunately, I didn’t spend much (if any) time exploring the little town of Winthrop, although it was super cute. My stay in the cabin has me wanting to make a return, so hopefully this won’t be my last trip to Winthrop, Washington.
